All told it took another AUS$500 and two 120km round trips to the airport before I got possession and it could easily have been worse if I hadn't been retired Qantas staff. Some kind assistance from customs people also helped but when it was all over each tyre had cost a little over AUS$400.
A few months later I got another six tyres from Summit Racing but had them sent to a friend of a friend who was loading an Australian bound shipping container in LA. That shipment worked out at around AUS$300 each by the time I got them home.
It may be worth your while to talk to Nigel Ward of Military Vehicle Spares in Brisbane as he stocks Indian made tyres in the size you want. Speedway is the brand I've seen and they seem to be ok. Getting them to NZ may be an issue though.

Just curious, what were the extra $500 charges for. Just regular import fees or something specific to the tyres?
