News to me. Perhaps he is thinking of the armoured snowmobile or an American Weasel. Not sure how much desert use they saw since they were fairly late in the war.
As to wider track, there is very little clearance between the track and the hull as it is. Even an inch wider on each side would pretty much make them unworkable.
