In accordance with the Vehicle Markings Manual, the DND number was to be located on each door six inches below the window. Since there was a spare tire in the way on the M152 on the drivers side, the number would end up in an alternate position on that side. I would suggest that since the manual did not specify an alternate, so apparently it may have been up to the unit or the individual driver.
Quote:
DND NUMBERS
6. (a) DND vehicle numbers will be painted on all vehicles. They will be painted on both doors of the driver’s compartment, six inches below the
window. In the case of vehicles not having doors, they will be centrally located on the sides of the body. On motorcycles the DND number will be
placed on top of the petrol tank in rear of filler cap. On vehicles such as AFV’s, the UND number will be centrally located on the sides and rear.
On staff cars, the number will be located in the driver’s compartment in the centre of the instrument panel below the windshield wiper control
button. If there is insufficient space, the number will be placed to the right of the button.
(b) The DND number will be painted in white except on those vehicles which, under CAO 211-1 dated 13 Oct., 47, are painted yellow,
in which case the DND number will be painted in black. Each number will be 2 inches high, 1-1/4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick.
A reduction in dimensions is permissible in the case of staff cars, cars 5-cwt and motorcycles.
(c) Vehicle classification letters and abbreviated unit or Corps titles will NOT be painted on doors.
