Hi Charlie. I curious about the length of the two sizes of shovel blades you refer to. The photo below shows a couple of shovel examples that I have laying around here. I note there are several differences: including slightly different "neck" angles, blade length and handle length.

The 3 on the left (despite different degrees of wear) I believe were originally all the same blade length (approx 11-3/8"). The one on the right is one inch longer at approx 12-3/8 (tip to shoulder).

The neck angles are slightly different, with the one on the left having the greatest angle, the two in the middle being similar, and the one on the right having the flattest angle.

The three shovels on the left all fit the M38A1 underhood mount fairly well, but the one on the right will not fit. The fit seems to be mainly a function of neck angle, but the blade length or handle length (overall length) is definitely a limiting factor.

Can you tell if my example on the right is what you are looking for?
