The square-section dynamotors are a little odd (but obviously made the mountings a whole lot easier), and while the internals look horribly complicated it's actually a very simple device - effectively the same as the British twin dynamotor supply unit, but with twin input windings and commutators to provide selectable 12 or 24 volt input options. It's somewhat over-engineered, just about everything has interference suppressors fitted, and is extremely quiet in operation.
