I'm am not 100% sure, Dirk, but it looks very much like the end-piece for a set of barrel cleaning staves for a tank.
While serving on Cougar AVGP's here in the early 1980's I had such an item in my gun cleaning kit. Cougars had a 76mm gun (Same as a Scorpion Light Tank).
The more I look at it, the more I say it's a part of a British (or Cdn) barrel cleaning set.
