Default There weren't any!

Hello Marco,

In 1940 the word went out and all the roadsigns were taken down so that invading parachutists, nuns, spys etc. wouldn't know where to go.

According to my late mother who learnt to drive in 1943 it made it extremely difficult to get about in the lanes of Buckinghamshire and many other places to no doubt.

Whether this measure ever confused a German is hard to say, but it certainly confused many Brits, Canadians and Americans.

Map reading was at a premium, as her elder brother found to his cost, when as a young battery officer he led his column of quads and 25 pdrs by error up a no through road into a farm yard.

Each quad, limber and gun had to be laboriously turned one by one through a gap in a hedge.

As they say, an officer with a map, is a very dangerous thing....

Regards
