With this day and age of computers, many of the codes are now on computer. If you come accross a copy of the Cdn Govt Cat of Material on CD, there is a section which will identify the Equipment maintenance codes. This is a 5 digit code which is used for everything from aircraft to tents. For example, SMPs are in the 30XXX range, with the old jeeps 30100-30104. The M151 was 30105, and the CJ7s wrere 30106. 5/4 tons were 30200, MLVWs are in the 30350 range, etc.
You'll note that these same numbers are part of the code used on the manual for that particular equipment.

There also exists the Equipment configuration codes (ECC), which will identify particular variations like IKEE installation. These are a bit more confusing than the EMCs.
