Canada to return "clawbacks" to disabled veterans
Thu Oct 30, 4:03 PM ET

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada will allow veterans to collect governmentpensions in addition to military disability payments, Canada's Military Ombudsman said.

Andre Marin told reporters the government
would end the so-called clawback, which
forces disabled veterans to repay any other
government pensions they had received.

Current and discharged members of Canada's
armed forces are entitled to military disability
pensions because of illness or injuries
sustained during active service.

"Soldiers should not arbitrarily lose financial benefits after dedicating their lives to service for this country," insisted Marin.

Marin said he had called on the government to end the practice of clawing back the disability pensions and to reimburse any military
personnel who had had their benefits reduced since October 27, 2000.

The ombudsman said Defence Minister John McCallum had "reviewed the report and agrees with all of the recommendations."
