I don't recall hearing about this tradition for soldiers, but I love the whole idea of it.
I'm sorry I also don't recall if I ever heard about what your Mom and all of you were going through for some time, and I really am glad that those hard times are past for your Mom and all of you. Its hard to see someone you love suffer. A friend of mine, a Vietnam Vet who received a DSM (?) (USA distinguished service medal?) lost his mother Dec 12 and he and his siblings are going through a similar time as you and your family.
I'm glad that you and my friend, and your families, have decades of memories and experiences of your Mom's, because they really are treasures to have, when we can't have them with us still. I love my memories of my parents. The grief parts just told me how much I loved and missed them. Very mixed feelings that came in waves, and I just let them happen. It takes getting used to, for sure.
