Bob your correct about most important part the “practice”, I have to force myself to remember to practice before I start welding the "finished" product. I keep a scrap box in the corner of the shop where all the scrap steal goes and when its time to start welding on a fender or some other "visible" piece I grab some scrap of the same thickness and practice until I'm satisfied with the quality of the weld. Found that it actually takes less time than getting a lousy weld and spending a lot of time grinding it smooth.
