If you go out at dusk with your flash camera, dampen the area you want to highlight, then take a flash photo, you'll be surprised how the pigment in the numbers lights up.
Give it a try, I've been doing it for years with a fair amount of success.
One Dodge W/C restored in the Rutherglen area a few years ago, had the Allied Star surrounded by a Yellow circle. This I believe was the correct markings for "Operation Husky" the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The owner unfortunately didn't copy it when he repaintd it and just put a White circle around the star.
