I was a short timer...got sucked into a boxtop back in 81. Someone came around asking if guys wanted to load and unload aircraft in Ottawa or Trenton for some kind of ex. Thinking I was getting a swan out east, coupled with visits to the war museum, I put my name in (and thus broke rule #1 in the military: NEVER VOLUNTEER).That afternoon, the section MWO called me to tell me to go to supply the next morning to pick up my arctic gear.
The morning we were supposed to leave for Thule, we got a reprieve when the forklift dropped one of the two pallets of Beer that the plane was really travellng to deliver...we were just the hitch hikers. The pallets made for a nice bed to sleep on during the trip.
Quick 2 week boxtop later (it was just for fuel delivery) and we were heading home to Winnipeg. It was a bit of a surprise when, getting off the herc, it was colder in Winnipeg than it had been the whole time we were in Alert.
