According to the notes on the Nominal Roll, your Uncle joined the SAR ON 25 March, 1945 - that would explain why your first photo looks more like the Winter/Spring of '45 then July/August of '44.
As Luc has pointed out, there is an excellent book available on the SAR, entitled:
