I am nearly finished restoring a scout car, in North Africa colour scheme, the owner has requested it to be marked up in the unit markings of a good friend of his who was in the 1st Bn. Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, attached to the 10th Indian Division. I do know that they took part in the Battle of Gazala. I spoke to the DCLI veteran and being light infantry, he did not remember they had many vehicles, having to walk everywhere! So with a bit of artistic licence here, I am searching for either markings of this unit, or a recce unit in same division at that time.

Is there anyone with accurate records of this campaign that can help? I have been through all my books and cannot find anything positive.

Richard
Hi Richard;

At the time of 'Gazala', 1 DCLI were part of 21 Indian Infantry Brigade, which at that time was the Junior Infantry Brigade of the 10th Indian Division. The Arm of Service marking (if displayed) on the transport of 1 DCLI would have been the AoS serial '60' on a brown background (the AoS serial '60' denoting the Sr Bn of the Bde and the Brown AoS plate the Jr Bde of the Div). The Formation Sign used (again, if displayed) would have been that of 10 Ind Div. Hope this helps.

Cheers
