Of the three or four howitzers that were out in the scrapyard that I used to make my C1, pretty much all of them showed signs of having been rolled and dragged. There is no suspension on a C1 (M2A2) and the C3 is no different suspension wise. It is also not very visible behind the towing vehicle. When they start to bounce, stuff happens.
Generally, the damage ends up being bent sheilds and the support brackets, along with the damaged elbow telescope mount.
In the photo, the clamp holding the two trails seems to have failed and allowed the one leg to move away. Hopefully (for the sake of the number one) that happened after the rollover and was not the cause of it.
Regarding the term cannon, it is applicable to the M2A2. The very first entry in the parts manual is "Cannon, 105 mm howitzer, M2A1". While I am no fan of the way journalists sensationalize things on the news these days, I was glad to see that they did not manage to put the term "AK47" or UZI into this story.
