To me, it seems a waste of time to convert the air cleaner to a modern type. My air cleaner only needs servicing about once a year, here on the wet coast there is very little dust. In the city, it is even less of an issue. I know one old timer that drove his Land Rover for years with no air cleaner at all, but I wouldn't even consider doing that myself!

K&N filters work great, but the oil on them tends to dry out when the vehicle is parked for any length of time. Once it is dry, it is essentially useless as a filter. You have to be sure it is always well oiled. I had one on a Toyota pickup that was used daily on dusty logging roads, and it needed cleaning at least as often as an old oil bath type would.
