Precisely so made by GP&F company in 1951. But sadly as many of the vintage water cans you find they have been used for fuel. As this one has indicated by its red painted lid and telltale odor.
The trick is to find one that has not been used for fuel and is also not rusted out as many are. Once used for fuel they can never come back. It gets into the metal and will sweat out no matter what you do.

But its a good display piece as you dont see many with the Vehicle CAR # stencilled on. I was told that Alan Dornan owns this M38 but I have been unable to contact him to verify.
