It has been a lot of years since I worked with these, but do I recall the knotted rope and piece of wood that Lynn mentions were only required if the batteries being charged were stone dead? Seems to me it had electric start (basically using the generator as a starting motor) .
We were still using these up to about 1980ish in the reserves, along with the C-42 radio sets.
