Default reskinning 11 cab

Hi all. Has anyone reskinned the rear of a cab. Is drilling the spot welds or grinding the best? What about welding the new sheet on? Would mig welding mark the outside of the sheet. Has anyone heard of pinch welding?

Default reskinned cab

hi phil , ive reskinned my 13 cab rear panel,
mig welding does pull the panel and you have to sand of
the slag on the back of the panel otherwise it will
show through, mig is not original ,and to spot weld
you have to have all surfaces really clean.
if i had access to a spot welder i would use it in preference.

Default spot welder

there is an attachment you can get that turns a stick welder in to a spot welder . It isn't that expensive and if you are extremely concerned about authenticity.
Also a mig welder with gas shield should not have any slag to leave behind, were you using flux core mig with and no gas shield?

Default mig weld

hi ken and snowtractor. I'll try experimenting on some scrap metal adn see how my mig welding goes. I'm interested in that spot welder attachment. I might look around for one. My dad has restored a few vehicles and is always repairing or replacing body sheeting.

Default Spot welding

I have a panel beater friend, who a couple of years ago bought a mig that has a spot welding set up with it (I think they're using high tensile in cars now) he does a lot of truck repairs.
Anyhow, what I'm alluding to is that a spot welding capability in a modern panel shop, may be a fairly common thing ,so access to a modern, functional spot welder might not be too difficult

Default spot welding

Hi Phil.
Am looking at your page right now. Just what I was looking for. Did you have much trouble removing the W brace. Just a lot of grinding. Except for part of the frame cut out behind the seat, my frame can be reused. I like the idea of the paper templates.
How do you like your welder. It has a long enough reach?
I think I'll spend some more time viewing your photos and may have some more questions.
Thanks

Phil, I have a couple of extra cab backs that just require minor repairs if you're interested. There's floor panels and most of the doghouse too.

Default control panel

Hi David. I will keep you in mind. Just took the cab apart. Will take a closer look at everything. You wouldn't have a control panel, or enough of one to make a pattern from?

When you say control panel do you mean the area around the instruments, which I think I already have a drawing for or do you mean the panel that goes from one side of the cab to the other under the windshield?

As to the W braces on the back of the cab your correct just a lot of cutting and grinding, as to the top and bottom edges and the door hinge edge these took a lot more effort. Did not have the equipment to bend the curves so I had to notch and bend then weld the cuts back up.

Default panel

It is the panel that the speedo/gauges and switches mount on. There is a picture (-Fig.7 control panel/ early type) on the OldCMP site under Manuals-special pattern vehicles. Not sure if the chevy and ford are the same size and shape.

Just noticed that "f15" on your post so the drawing I have won't be of as much help because the are for "c15"

Cheers Phil

Default Winter may already be there

My spies in Winterpeg report that seasonal changeover is almost complete. Mosquito season is over. Flurries were seen today.

On the other hand, it is still suitable for motorcycles here in Ottawa.

And to all of you on the wet coast (what ever happened to Tofino? did they get a wet?) who are about to remind me that they don't have to shovel rain..... I want to remind you that we get sun between the snows.

Enjoy that great Canadian pastime, grumbling about the weather.

Max. Hope to travel down under one of these years. Don't look forward to the flight. Sitting in those airline seats is like sitting in an 11 cab for 16 hours.

Tony. Was about to ask what the cover is for below the dash. Mine was weld over. Never even thought about how I would put oil in. The thread shows a good photo of the 11 cab. Thanks
