I need a new carb for my engine, so I need to know which engine I have. Is this an L head or an F head engine? More to the point which carb to get for my engine? Right now I have a fuel leaking Solex S6DG. That is the number on the top of the carb.

The L and the F refer to the locations of the valve train in relation to the pistons. A flathead engine (like yours) is an L head. These engines were later redesigned for more horsepower by moving the intake valves into a larger head, which makes the intake flow more efficient. These were known as a F head.
Some guys get mixed up because of the F head and Flat head. They are not the same engine. Long and short, yours is an L head (also known as a flathead.) |

Thanks for clearing that up. I ordered a new carb and choke cable and a new gasket for the carb. I bought the gasket with the little triangle shaped thing. What is that for and is it needed or should a guy just use the gasket that comes with it?

I would not know what a hotchkis 201 is? All I know is that my GPW was used on an air force base to guide planes around the airport. It is called a "follow me" GPW. It had a big sign on it that said "FOLLOW ME" and the pilots would follow it. I guess thats why it is in pretty good shape for being 68 years old.

The original carb for a GPW/MB was the Carter 539S made in St Luis. Still available here in UK as new or rebuilt.
The Hotchkis is a post war French made Jeep after they took over the tooling and licence to copy the war time Willys and Ford Jeeps. I think that triangle affair that fits at the carb flange is simply to aid the mixing of the fuel air intake. Ron |

Hi
That carby is a Solex PBI ..used on various European cars ( and Hotchkiss Jeep ) and a variant of it was used on series 1 Land Rovers and Standard Vanguard etc. Those carbies are currently made in India for the US market where many Jeep owners replace the Carter with a Solex PBI.. MIKE

Hello Nelson84,
This may help with your Solex carburettor. Apologies for the grainey appearance. Cheers John W. |

The motor in the pic is not the original. It's a post war model as evidenced by the ridges between the head bolts. I bought a '42 GPW years ago which had the same engine and a brass plaque on the dash regarding the replacement of the motor by a civilian contractor in Arizona.
P.S., love the stack of washers under the too long head bolt. Derek.

Thats why I asked earlier if it was a hotchkis 201, because they came out with the solex carb.Original wartime bits are a little sparse in those photos.

![]() By the way I got my new carb and choke in the mail and I bolted it on and now she runs really good. My choke was stuck on full and when I put it into reverse I let the clutch out and I must have did about 60 klicks coming out of the garage. Boy these old jeeps are quick. I fixed the sticking choke. That old engine purrs like a kitten. Doesn't smoke or anything.
