Stuart, Do you have any other info on the Iltis - call sign, tac signs etc...to narrow down my search? If I know where the vehicle came from/CFR/SN and other info, I can direct your question to those who would know.

Default Flagman

Flagman and AY3830 on your Iltis, hmm?

We spoke about this at the Ottawa Rotters meeting. I don't recognize these as military markings. There is too much detail and too much 'style' for any ten soldiers with spray cans! The number is not a CFR or licence plate sequence from Ontario. Maybe another province.

The number will bethe DA or MIU from the unit which held the Iltis. If you know anyone in a supply role, they will be able to tell you who held the vehicle by that account number.

The figure is not an accepted nor authorised military marking, but may have some significance at the unit level.

In the '80s, "acceptance" and "authorization" never stopped units from putting their own markings on vehicles - such as the horse mounted scout silouette on 12RBC recce vehicles, and the fleur de lis on X Battery M109s.

The "flag man" is a new one on me tho'...

Both the MLVW M35Cdn and the Iltis had their CFRs incorporated into the vehicles VIN number. The exceptions are that if a license plate was lost or stolen, then a new CFR was supposed to be assigned to the vehicle (although this did not always happen and was a PIA to the mechanics when it did.)

The QL4 stencil indicaes that it would have been for the vehicle techs trade qualification level 4 which was unit on job training. It would seem that this particular base maintenance had an Iltis kept on their MIU for that purpose.
