Going through the AWM war diaries ... gems are there . I've been looking at HQ Middle East AIF .The WD number for the said stolen Morris seems to be a bit brief . One court marshal was covened by Blamey himself .. common crimes : forging pay book ..very harsh penalties eg 2 years hard labour ! Mike

lots of interesting orders issued relating to MT ...
One concerning buying petrol from a civilian Shell garage. The AIF HQ in Cairo hired two floating hostels for troops on leave - steam paddle steamers no less . Mike

My grandfather who was a veterinary officer in the 1914 - 18 war with Royal Artillery batteries said that adjacent Australian units would often steal horses from British units, or more cleverly swap ill or damaged horses for better ones tied up over night in the lines. In the morning the troopers would arrive to find a broken down horse where the previous night a good one had been tied up. Nick |
