Default Willys MB script hood number

A local man just bought , and is extensively rebuilding, a Willys script MB. He tells me that the frame number matches the truck.

When done - he wants to mark it as HLIofC, post DDay.

Can someone suggest a range of appropriate hood numbers for this truck?

Data plate reads as follows:

155720 (Frame)?

180715 (Engine)?

505 (Contract)?

7-1-42 Date

many thanks

Charlie, if he goes on the G503 forum, they run an extensive list of numbers. If you have a little study you will get pretty close. You may well find one that is just a few serial numbers before and after, and if you look at a few you will be able to arrive at a close result. Mine is serial #MB 135668 Early April 42.
Marked as a US army Jeep, The U.S. registration number should start with a "2" because the first number is dictated by the vehicle type (1/4 ton 4x4)
A USMC jeep may not even have a rego number, and if in Canadian service, I have no idea.

Hope that helps.

I now see I was barking up the wrong tree.

I would argue that very few contract 505 jeeps made it all the way from issue, to overseas and then loaded aboard a ship on its way to Normandy in 1944.

I would even suggest none - so?

Charlie, the is no correlation between serial numbers and registration numbers on Jeeps unfortunately. Best bet may be to find some period pics of Canadian Jeeps in service and go from there.

Default 42mb

Charles My 42 MB serial number 139666 had a original war department number cm433329. Delivery day was defaced so best guess was April 1, 1942pun intended. I don't know if this jeep ever left Canada perhaps this will help.

G'day Charlie,

If you have a copy of John Farley book *The Standardised war-time Jeep 2*, have a look on page 58 & 59.
It state's Canadian Army
Contract No CDLV-505
( Part order of 1,000 of 3,000 units)
Chassis No Range: MB 155498 - MB 156498
Registration: Unknown

Some numbers which appeared on this contract included,
CM4231488 and CM4231785

So Charlie I hope this is some help to you but like Chris state's you will need to fine some period photo's.

Cheers for now
Ian
