I want to pull the rear axle off my mortar carrier, the book says about stripping out the shafts and the rear brake drums, I havern't done this before and wanted to just pull the whole lot off in one lump, is it just a matter of undoing the gearbox to axle bolts and axle to carrier structure bolts and giving it a pulll?, dont want to break anything.

There are no gear box to axle bolts. The axle bolts, to the rear hull plate,via a short adapter. To remove the bolts holding the back plates to the hull, there is a notch in the brake drum. If you have doubts about being able to remove the hubs and drums after,(do they turn freely?) I would do them first. The hubs are heavy. The gear box is held in its position to the rear, by the two rods from the bell housing to the rear hull plate. The coupling will slide apart. Remove your speedo drive first.

I think the reason for taking off the brake drums is to fold. #1 to make the rear axle lighter to move around. # 2. I don't think you can get at the bolts/screws that attach the brake backing plates to the hull side plate. I seem to remember these were the domeheaded/countersunk screws.

Thats why there is a notch in you brake drum rib.It lets you do 1 bolt at a time.

Think the reason why they say to undo the drums and loosen the back plates is becouse of the two shims that are between the hubs and the armoure if you dont loosen them off you will struggle to replace them when you put it back on. Trust me i have done this its not fun you can get around it with the use of a rachet strap but its not very safe Taking the axle off is fine it just drops out but watch out as your carrier will lift up as you drop it off.

yeah and make sure you remove the brass speedo cable union before you drop the axel or you will cry for a while..... personally i would pull the drums as it MAKES you check the assemblies within plus it takes a massive amount of weight off the axel to move it around.
