still trying to figure my way thru threads, hope this belongs here.
I am very interested in military history and I am hoping to own a jeep or any vehicle for that matter soon, I realize this will probably take me a very long time (but I am young so I have the time to wait... What would you like to know?
The first car as we all know as jeep was the Bantam. Anothers cars was from companies Ford and Willys. In the end of the goverment commission. was only one car which can drive and it was the Bantam. Anothers (Ford, Willys) was only non moving prototypes. And now Bantam company: In 30´s of the twenty century can Austin company on the American market. In the USA grown up the American Austin co. in the 1936 was sold and remane on the Bantam. The first jeep was Austin ![]() ![]()

If no one saved the bad ones, our grand kids wouldnt know how bad they were.

Lynn when I joined the military vehicle scene 25 years ago. It disappointed me to see how many guys and gals where poncing round in Murican vehicles and uniforms. Especially as most of them had some quaint old British accent

towards the end when they talked about the M38, they said something along the lines that it wasnt really improved as a design.
I thought the M38 has addressed role over issue to the older jeeps, not fully but overall improvement. or was that the M38A1? and how can you tell a M38 from a civi jeep? a guy at the corner gas station has what appears to be a M38 with plow and a hard cab but maybe its a cj |

For starters, look at the rear of the body, the passenger's side and the battery box. ![]() There is no comparison between a WWII GP and anything civilian! A military M38 does not have a tailgate; a CJ3 will. A military M38A1 has the batteries in an box with a big hinged external lid in front of the passenger's knees. The CJ5 has them under the hood. A military M38A1 has the gas tank under the driver's seat. The CJ5 has a separate filler neck on the body side - after the first couple of years. A military M38A1 will have a 24v slave cable socket on the right front sidewall.

I do like the American technology of WW2, but they have regressed. The Jeep,WC Dodge, are pleasing to the eye, things of beauty. The ugly vehicles,(like CMP's) "they have character" I dont know where the post war American designers came from, but they dropped the ball, badly.These vehicles fit into another catagory. My opinion only

M38 is the militarized version of the Cj3a .... both have tailgates- just that the M38 had a reinforced design to carry a rear mounted spare ,as well as, a fuel carrier ....
M38 had a plain [as ordered/designed] center pad and the civi Cj3a had Willy's embossed..... M38 is a bulletproof,excellently tough design of a flatfender M38A1 was, IMO , the toughest vehicle to ever wear the name 'jeep'-bar none The M38A1 had the same fuel tube design to the outside and both M38A1 and CJ-5 had the tanks under the drivers seat [as all models did] The M38A1 had a larger diameter filler as compared to the CJ-5 The M38 had a larger dia filler than the CJ2a/CJ3a,etc..... The M38 and M38A1 ,being 24 volts ,had 2 batteries as opposed to the civi 6 or 12v units... The one battery was in the same spot as the civis location wise under the hood..... and the 2nd battery was in the cowl ..... M38 battery cowl comparment had a hinged lid - M38A1 ealy units had a thumbscrewed removable lid- later ones were hinged..... Hope this clears the info up........ |
