Only a pair of conspiring Cliff's would make such comments. Mk.1 Carriers are the true and defining last word in carrier aesthetics. I can only surmise the Australian people couldn't appreciate, or their manufacturing ability wasn't up to manufacturing, the original product.

At the risk of being chastised for getting off topic, I agree with OZ Cliff that ours are the best in the world.

At least we didn't need the extra wheel on the rear bogie to act as a training wheel as the T-16 does.

It has to be the Bren Carrier - I mean the real one! I would give the Aussies the credit for functionality, for instance they built their carriers with a bit of clearance between the track and the guards. - and the track tends to stay on.-- but pretty,...naagh!!!

It seems the Profile publishers were not to excitred about Austrailian carriers. There are no other pictures of them, but this picture (of a Mk.1 complete with Bren, Boys and No.11 wireless set) is captiioned as being Austrailian crewed in the western desert.

Alex Blair suggests having an ice cream cone handy to cool the fuel pump with in a hot climate.

In the case of Uncle Al's flathead majic show performed in the engine compartment of someone's T-16,on a long hill on a blazing hot day in Southern Ontario,I used bottled water...
But even 98.6F human body fluid works too...
Any port in a storm...
Stick to my ice cream story though...there were women and children in the Carrier at the aforementioned performance..
It got us home....

Bruce, if you go back and have a look at your Aussie crew in the western desert pic, you will notice a carrier of EXCEPTIONAL BEAUTY on the left crewed by two guys with funny hats. Isn't that sloping rear armour nice? It looks a little less like a dumpster, or mini skip or handybin- whatever applies in your corner of the world. Anndd....Geoff, Aust/N.Z. lp2/2a's came with "tropical" radiators, (probably of Canadian origin)

You're not suggesting that sloped armoured beauty is of Australian origin? Surely it is a British made Scout carrier.

Scout Carrier = man with his head sticking up sits in the rear left

Bren Carrier = man with his head sticking up sits in the rear right

UNIVERSAL Carrier = man can choose which side he want's to sit with his head sticking up

Bruce, The very first pic you posted is a Scout (Have any survived) The one in the left rear of the pic. you posted,post subject:" for Aussies.", is a Bren carrier. They are basically a mirror image of each other. In your first pic.(Scout) the long box lays along the top of the left guard, with armour on the right(drivers) side having a similar profile to a universal. The Bren has the long box mounted on the right guard(behind the driver) and the rear armour cuts away from the same height as the universal. The scout appears to have a high engine cover as compared the the bren.
And no I'm not suggesting this was an Aussie idea. New Zealand procured six "Brens" from the U.K. in 1938,(of which two survive) These were the basis of our L.P.(1), (Not the same as the Aussie LP1)of which N.Z. built 40. This was in 1940/41. Technology had rolled along a bit by this time and N.Z. decided to run with the very functional Aussie Pattern carrier, of which our very fastidious Mr Smith(where is he?)has much detail.
Lastly, If man in universal carrier chooses to sit with head "sticking" up, he might wake up dead!

Thanks Hanno for telling what that big green thing is.

I have walked by it so many times at Harold's, but never got inside it, as he used it as a storage hut.

Did have some rust in it, and it is so big that I presume its use now will be display. Do not know where this one came from, but I noted that it had an Australian delivery address on the side of it.

Harold always referred to it as a wading tank, but I think that now it might quickly sink.

I Thought Keith that it might be the same one as in your photo, but I do not recall the T16 being in the yard at all.

Am I correct in thinking that LVT were not used very much in Australia.

In the picture of the Scout, is an aerial mount on the R.H.rear (to the front of the bren gunners head). The Aerial is about 7/8" in dia. where it plugs into the mount. The mount shown here on the English Scout is also common to the Canadian Mk1's. Has anybody got a spare for sale? If not, can someone arm me with a description/designation and point me in the right direction. Does it relate to a particular radio set? Thanks.
