Hi, I making some stainless carrier downpipes, Can anyone confirm they are the same profile for a wartime Flathead V8 21 stud block compared to a 24 stud block. I have aligned the first set to Shauns Ronson carrier with a 21 stud in it, I have 12 more downpipes to weld up and want to make sure they are the same before welding.
So if someone can confirm this ASAP that would be great, then I can crack on. Thanks kevin.

I think the question you are asking is:
Are the exhaust manifolds interchangeable between the 21 and 24 stud motors? and I think the answer is yes. I believe the manifolds pictured below fit both engines.

Hi Lynn, Thanks for the info, I also need to know that you can take the same down pipe from a 21 stud engine and fit it to a 24 stud and both will align correctly between the manifold and the bottom casting hole mounted on the carrier floor plate.
Thanks Kevin.

Basically I think when Henry redesigned his block to seal better (24 stud) he never moved the exhaust ports. So I believe they have stayed the same throughout the production of the flathead.

Kevin quick way to check for sure is your parts book as there would be two sets of downpipes listed for different engines

Hi, Regarding the manufacture of the carrier downpipes, We hit a snag whilst making the downpipes yesterday. I decided to complete the manufacture of 10 lefthand downpipes, but the right hand ones will need to be completed after christmas now due to alignment anomalies
![]() Its pretty clear a 21 stud block exhaust manifold is the same as a 24 stud now, but I plan to phsically check this before sending out any downpipes, so I am now ordering enough parts to make an extra 3 sets. If anyone wants a set there are now 3 sets going spare, on this run i will have to buy the flanges in stainless to save time. They will be £60 a set. the following people have a set already coming; jordan, ben, ross. thanks kev.

Hi, I have completed a run of stainless, exhaust downpipes. I have 2 more sets to finish, making 12 sets in total. I have left the ends plain at 38mm, 1 1/2". What I have found is after grit blasting two sets of cast floor elbows of 65 years of corrosion that they have opened up a bit so would not then seal if the downpipe was made to factory spec, so it is up to the individual to swage out the ends slightly so they can be tailered to your elbows.............makes sense.
they are welded both inside and outside. Interesting point to note is these elbows are not actually a mirror image of each other, the right hand one has a longer reach than the left one. kev.

Hi, Thanks richard, each flange was hand made, 11mm stainless plate cut and drilled with 40mm hole, managed to find some pipe flange plates at work for some of them hence some have shorter squared off flanges but i will be using those ones on my carriers.
hows that riveting going?. kev.

richard, i sure we can work something out for all those wheels you brought down from up north. I have a jig made now so can turn the other round a bit quicker..................i hope
![]() When you come to fit these pipes please be midful that the position of your engine can vary depending on the tightness of your rear mounting threaded rods, I would recommend any one fitting them to remove your floor castings and refurbish with a 38mm flap wheel on the bench and test fit to get your seal. steven yours were posted to day, should be with you friday/mon. kev.

Any suggestions??

Hi Jordan, We aligned those downpipes and tack welded them in situ on shauns Canadian Ronson Carrier on a 21 Stud flathead, before fully welding them. We have since made a jig and cross checked them with 'puddle jumpers' MK2 carriers downpipes (also 21 stud). Can you email me some pictures of the misalignment, I can only think a 24 stud is different but i thought we bottomed that out in this thread!. full refund given.

Hi Kevin
I just realized I hadn't fully bolted the engine mounts down yet. I can take some pics but won't be able to post them for a few hrs as I'm not home. I'm using my iPhone. My engine is a 24 stud one. The down pipes look great and match what I have left of an original. Let me play around a bit Was more just wondering in anyone had some suggestions to try out

Jordan, I hope they fit because I have four sets here for my carriers. You can get alot of movement depending how tight your gearbox stud bars are adjusted, also the floor elbow bolts I would slacken off to, remeber your gasket. They should pull up a 2 to 3mm gap.
I shall sit here praying to myself they fit your Mk1 as mine are all 24 stud Mk1's. kev.

Kevin,
You are right that the engine in Puddle Jumper is a 21 stud, but the down pipes fitted on PJ are for the original 24 stud. So there should be difference between engines .

Here are the pictures. I didn't get a chance to measure it but the distance they are out is about the same as the thickness of the flange. Im going to try some bolts that are a bit longer to see if it will pull it in. If not I am thinking that a spacer cut the same as the flang would work?
I compared them to what I had left from an original. It was rusted away from the elbow down. It lined up perfectly. The only thing I can see is that the original is a bit tighter on the curve and the flange is at 90deg to the pipe where they meet. Has anyone else tried fitting theirs yet. Kevin, don't take this as a hit to your work. What I got is very well made. They are a hard piece to copy due to the double bend in them.

Jordan, What I can do next week is wheel the mortar carrier out the garage and swing in a 24 stud engine, to check the alignment of what I have here, all I can say they match the canadian downpipes shaun has on 'puddle jumper' and the ronson is running presently with a set on.
Have you got new engine mounts on there, are they same spec as carrier originals, I am just thinking perhaps your engine is sitting a bit higher, If you have new mounts perhaps trial fit the fan cowling to see if the fan sits centralised. I also understand those mounts can be assemblied incorrectly, not saying yours are but its worth checking. KEV.

Hi Jordan, I swung in a 24 stud canadian engine into the mortar carrier today. Your downpipes will fit, What you need to do is remove all four cast elbow 5/16" floor bolts, check you have the correct size gasket on the cast elbow floor flange, put in four descent bolts & nuts and leave them slack, Bolt your downpipe to the exhaust manifold up tight with the correct gasket, then tighten the four floor bolts, everything should pull into position.
I couldnt bolt the downpipe to the exhaust maifold as the bolts are sheared off in there. How are you sealing the down pipe to the floor casting?. let me know how you get on. kev
