Marmon Herrington Light Tanks
Is there any Marmon Herrington light tanks in museums or private collections within Australia?
I hear of bits and pieces turning up, but I cant say I know of any complete or cut down tanks? Luke

yes
A local collector/dealer has or had a final drive unit , with the makers tag still on it . I queried him when I spotted the M-H tag on it , he planned to use it on a project or swap it for something from memory . Don't know what he ended up doing with it ... this was last year when I spotted it in his shed .
I owned one of the FRED LINK FM radios , fitted to those tanks . It's now at the AWM Canberra. The Link Co. made FM radios in the late 1930's when it was beginning in the USA . The manual said it was for the Netherlands East Indies light tank . Mike

Simple answer: No. All the MH light tanks that were on their way to the NEI and diverted to Oz saw limited use for a short time, before they were dismantled. The engines ended up being marinised to power Phillipine Lighters (most of which were the dumb variety, but a small number equal to about 1/2 the number of tanks were powered using the ex-MH light tank engines). The steel was reprotedly used in the fabrication of protection for Australian manufactured landing craft and small ships. They were supposedly dismantled at Ford Geelong.
Some suspension components were cobbled together to make one of the experimental half tracks, but the rest was scrapped. I published an article about the MH tank in Australia in AFV News manmy years ago which will have more details. As Mike K said, a radio set from one is now held by the AWM, thanks to Mike Kelly and a certain curator! Mike C

Hi Luke,
Those tiny tanks are absolutely magnificent. What a pity they have all been scrapped. I have considered making one using Stuart bogies and tracks. I have a differential/steering box out of one of the CTL tanks. It is a magnificent piece of engineering for its time, still like new inside. I have no use for it now so its yours, mates rates.
