Hi
I am working on a model of a Canadian CMP 4x4 15 cwt truck produced by Italeri. Now I have two kits of this model and both kits give different paint schemes. One says the truck (and canvas rear cover) should be painted dark green with black above and below. The other says it should be dark gray above and below. Which is correct? Is either one correct as I have not seen any photos that show this scheme (then again all I have seen are black and white.)? In addition the Tamyia models for the Chevrolet gun tractor give dark yellow in one kit and dark green in a different kit. Again which is correct? I am interested in the colours used in Europe after D-Day or Italy. How accurate are the colour schemes for Canadian vehicles and armour, given in these model kits? |

When you want to know about colour schemes, first you have to decide the year and theatre of operations you want to depict.

Canadian vehicles were the same colours as British vehicles in NWE. Here they were usually a basic colour of SCC 2 (brown) with a pattern known as 'Mickey Mouse Ears' in SCC1A (very dark brown) or black. The scheme is formerly known as MTP46/4A. Google this to see illustrations. In spring 1944 a green shade, SCC15 Olive Drab came into use and many front line vehicles had the SCC 2 colour repainted with SCC 15, the camouflage pattern remained
For Italy A basic colour of Light Mud with a pattern of black was used on many 15cwt trucks. This pattern is not MTP46 but one specifically for Italy. The NWE colours were also normal for Italy too from 1943 till 1945. As I recall the Tamiya instructions tell you to paint dark yellow, this is supposed to be Light Stone fro desert use. Their suggested colour is wrong, too dark. The green is probably SCC 15 or US Olive Drab only which is correct but again their suggested colour is wrong.

There is no such thing as "Canadian Brown", although it is often called than these days. Officialy it is SCC No.2 Brown. Click on the link to read more info and take note of what Mike Starmer wrote above - he's the expert! I saw your friend Martin Voogd's call for help on the gaf92.nl site. You might want to point out to him that Canadian jeeps were not painted "Canadian Brown", but US Olive Drab, sometimes with the 'Mickey Mouse Ears' camouflage scheme as pointed out above by Mike. I have been searching for the true shade of SCC No.2 Brown and have tried "Canadian Brown" from one supplier, a RAF Dark Earth and a Service Brown. None came near the paint chip in Mike Starmers book and a very small bracket from on an old armoured vehicle I am restoring .... then one day I was cleaning up parts and came across a large bracket that held the voltage regulator and reaiised it was the source I had been looking for and matches the wartime description nicley. It is available from RR Services, with my name on it.
