Hi, I have borrowed a Stacey towing attachment to copy, I need to replicate the three sandwiched pieces of steel, can any one advice on the type of steel used for this part, i.e. spring steel. I am having the two end brackets cast and have managed to locate an original hook and back plate, I think I can make the whole thing for about £550........will post some pics up of how this project progresses. Plan to put it on the mortar carrier.
Also whats the thickness of the angle iron that runs along the top??. kev.

Have you measured (or compared part numbers) to see if the spring leaves from a garden variety CMP would fit? I would make sense to use the same parts for all, if they fit.

I bought my spring leaves and hook from John Marchant, who told me it came from a CMP truck. My two end brackets are of welded construction. They came with the carrier and I was told they are a British variant? Ron

Maybe the dimensions match a modern vehicle's leaf springs? Start at the local junk yard...

Leaf spring work is cheap. Get the measurements and have a shop make them up. Those fancy rebound clips on them are another matter and will have to be hand made.
By what I know of spring work I have had done in the past, an attempt to salvage spring material off scrap truck's leaf springs will be way more work than it's worth. |

I'd be straight down to a commercial truck spring shop and just get them made Shouldn't be too much, and you'd have an end result that worked.

On the 'stacey towing attachment' there is a piece of angle iron that runs across the top, could someone possibly tell me the dimensions of this please, i.e. width, thickness of the metal and total length.
many thanks kevin.

Kevin. I got your PM. I'll post the sizes on here in case anyone else needs them.
The angle iron is 1 1/4"x1/4" total length is 31 1/2". The top edges are angled at 90 degrees. I made the tail lamp bracket myself. So probably not accurate. Ron |

Hi, I collected from the foundary today, two cast stacey arms, cast from originals, to replicate these at a reasonably price they have to be made with a solid core on the triangle section, this maintains the original cast numbers and date. I am having them machined at the moment for the mounting holes and large side holes to replicate the original round side cast lightning holes.
I am pretty sure if any more were made they could possibley do something in the casting process to replicate these recesses in some way, avoiding maching after. I will post some pics up after the weekend. For a set to be made without the mounting holes drilled and lightening holes would be £460 a set including VAT (this is just for the cast brackets, not including the towe hook, springs, angle iron etc). If anyone is interested please let me know before next wednesday, they will also need to be paid for before casting. I can deliver to Beltring. kevin.

Hi, Trial fitted the Tow attachment today, Everything lined up O.k., Was worth making, thanks for the loan of the originals, got an original spring and hook fitted, one thing I have noticed from looking at pictures of the tow/spring arrangement is that carriers seem to have a 'U clamp retainer' which I have made and yet to fit as pictured in the last picture, have not seen this on a CMP or other spring/tow hook.
Wont be making any more of these as they are expensive to make. kev.
