David,
I have a suspicion it is something to do with chasing a bag of wind, a useless occupation and something that was frowned upon to mention on MLU I seem to recall.

regards Richard

Thanks Richard, I thought as much.

It always seemed to me that it would be far more interesting to combine spectator sports. Suggestions:- Greyhound Racing/Running Target, Mounted Polo/Water Polo or perhaps Ski Jump/Clay Target.
These combined sports would definitely attract a great deal of worldwide publicity and record audiences.

"Rugby Union's Bledisloe Cup is contested by the Australia national rugby union team and New Zealand national rugby union team."

Big burly men lining up to bang heads together while some scrawny little guy scampers around their feet trying to catch hold of a stubby ended ball.

FWIW, the Canadian version of football is played by low-paid professional American and Canadian athletes. Bigger field than US football, one more player, and 3 downs to move 10 yds. There is so much parity between teams, it takes a few injuries or some bad luck to decide a winner. Friday night's game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Alouettes looked like a foregone conclusion with 2 mins to go. Don't leave your seats folks, the game isn't over. Saskatchewan won with seconds to go.
