The second pic in your link shows the CSIRO Jeep which was part of John Morgans 1954 Survey in the Northern Kimberley. This, the last of the great surveys, relied on mix of Horses and mules, Jeep, Studebaker, Austin K9, aerial photography with Avro Ansons, bulldozer and most importantly the (probably)first two Austin Champs used in Australia. These civilian models predated the Army purchase by several years.
“Those Austin Champs were heavy and the dust would billow up through the cab and the driver would come out after a day’s drive absolutely choked and covered in dust.” (Morgan)
Rich.
