Removing the spraypaint over markings you want to preserve might be as simple as rubbing with a paper towel wetted with lacquer thinner. It worked for me on a M135CDN I once owned. I suspect the relative age of the paints helped and it might also have been related to the paint types used.

Paint removers (including spray on oven cleaner) will generally only remove the top layer of paint. I know when I used to do militia jeeps, 8 coats of paint = 8 applications of paint remover.
