Guys,
Is there any place where one could source tactical maps used by Commonwealth units in Italy during WW 11 ? Not sure of the proper scale, but would be used at the squadron level of our recon units. Copies would be great. Thanks, Peter |

Peter, let me take a look. As I recall, I did have a whole stack of these which make great display items. The ones that I had were of England and some were marked up obviously used in exercises there during the war. I'll go through my swap meet item boxes and see if I have any left. I doubt any spectators would read the fine print and figure out where these were from...

Tim,
In an ideal world it would be the Adriatic coast, south of Rimini. In real world terms, I would like any maps of Italy where the Canadian forces served. Thanks, Peter |

Chris,
You're right, the average person wouldn't notice. Period correct maps would be far better than anything I've got. Peter |

One of my duties to Her Majesty is unit historian for the Canadian Forces' mapping unit. I hold a few dozen 1944 and 45 maps made by one of our predecessor units. I can happily plot off a few copies of France, Netherlands or Germany. Not much choice in where, just whatever dufflebag souvenirs have circulated back to the royal us. These qualify as Non Public Property and sharing is the order of the day.
Always open for trades and copies of other NW Europe Canadian-made maps.

Terry and Rob,
Thanks. I'm now at the pointed end of what promises to be a big wedge. The Kit for my Lynx 11. I have decided to restore my Lynx to represent one commanded by Corporal James Paterson, MM, D squadron, Royal Canadian Dragoons, during the first week of September 1944. During this period the RCD was active along the Adriatic coast, south of Rimini. Being 'old school', I think that the appropriate period maps that they would have used would be a logical first step. Peter I now have some period correct 1:200,00 maps sourced. |
