CMP fuel tank sizes

As you guys know I do models. Keefy kindly measured the #9 Ford GT (Aust) fuel tank for me but I would also like to know the following so I can reproduce them in 1/35 scale for future projects.

I need Length X width X height of the following please

F60, C60
F30, C30
F15, C15

metric or imperial does not matter as I can work in both.

All others are basically the same with the exception of the C60X which uses the same size 21 gall tanks as the gun tractors.

Sorry, but I'm not near one at the moment to take measurements.

Thanks Keith. I knew they were different to the Gun Tractor but I did not know that the GT one was used on the C60X so already I have learnt something new.

Cliff I also can tell you that the filler neck is in a different position on the C15A to the larger Blitzs, can't tell you about the F15A or 2wd versions though but I;m guessing they are also different.

Robert thanks for that. I can get the position of filler and straps off the photos I have but it can be a bit hard determining correct tank size from photos.

After fighting Mosquitos and the jungle out back the tank on my F15A is:

LENGTH 32 INCHES
HEIGHT 10 INCHES
DEPTH 12 INCHES
DISTANCE TO CENTRE LINE OF TANK STRAP (BOTH ENDS) 5 INCHES i.e. 5 inches from each end to the centre of the strap.

The filler is 8 INCHES from Forward facing end and 6 1/4 INCHES in length.

Hope this helps. PS No tank on the STBD side yet.

One of the more exotic CMP tanks ( can I say that ) , would be the tanks as fitted to the British Duple bodied C8's .

In this case , the filler neck protrudes out of the end/side panel of either tank e.g. , the neck is placed on each outside facing end panel.

One of these trucks is pictured in Bill Greggs profile on 8cwt's.

Not quite Keith



You can see the neck sticking out the end of the tank . The tanks a re mounted cross wise along the cab back as in the Canadian 1A1 style .

Thats me in 1978 at Barry ryans shed , Shepparton , this truck sold recently for 10 grand , in the same conditon ! This was the first C8 I had ever seen . I fell in love with it ...... it has civvy headlights and other mods too .

These odd C8's were fitted with British built bodies , almost same as the Morris Commercial, Humber ect. wooden floor and tailgate . The body plate read DBM Ltd London = Duple Bodies and Motors LTD London .....

Oddly , all of the C8's I have seen here , have had these bodies fitted, except for my cab 11 with Canadian body .

Those are the sizes (32"/12"/10") of the standard 12 1/4 Gal tank. Does anyone have the dimensions of the 21 Gal tanks please?

Regardless of my thoughts on Brexit (it seems a bit odd to be committing to something without knowing what you are comitting to, did the UK join the EU without knowing the terms?), I feel that since CMPs were designed in inches (and fractions?) in most cases it makes sense to discuss them in the units they were designed in. On the other hand, I feel vehicles designed in metric should normally be discussed in metric.


On second thought, perhaps the blind commitment to leave the EU isn't so odd, every few years we put an X on a ballot and trust that politicians (of many parties) will honestly represent us in a responsible fashion.... and unfortunately few of them do so once elected.

Exactly.

Excuse my Brexit comment, it was a good-natured poke at a topical subject. As I have explained in a couple of PMs I received on the matter, it was in no way meant to be a criticism or rejection of our European members.

We are custodians of historic vehicles, and the obligation is on us to try and keep that history as accurate as possible in preservation. I would hate to see some restorer in the year 2045 quote that "CMPs were an unusual combination of SAE, Whitworth and Metric systems".

I have worked on other projects that were designed using Imperial measurements, and while it totally did my head in trying to work out how many 2 13/64" boards went into a 6'7" panel, it worked out in the end because that was the system that it was designed to work with in the first place.

As Cliff started this thread with the intention of scaling parts for a model, I can fully understand the simplicity of the mathematics when working with Metric measurements to give dimensions for 1/35 or 1/43 models. It just makes thing easy.

Tony, Carriers built in Canada are CMPs. They are built with BSF threads. The parts book identifies as being built with metric plate. I believe that Ford of Canada made BSF bolts with American head and nut sizes.
That guy in 2045 is Correct!
I have since found that the floor in my Canadian hull is 3/16" (a bit less than 4.0 mm)

As an aside most cars are made with 7/16" UNF seat belt anchorages.

Actually 3/16" = 4.7625mm
5/32" = 3.96875mm

It was normal practice in the UK in WW2 to specify armour plate in mm. Also spark plugs were generally metric here by then too.

Just as Cliff I am by origin a scale modeller.....and that's why I have the measurements of the C60X tanks written down in millimeters as that's the language my hobby tape measurer speaks.

But I do apologize for this stupid mistake and will accept the proper punishment.
