Default Carrier, Set, No 22

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a Carrier, Set, No 22 Z1/ZA 3103 for mounting a WS19 wireless into a White M3A1 Scout Car AOP.

The description comes from the Australian Military Forces Armoured OP User Handbook. I've attached a picture from another MLU post which I think is the correct model.

Please PM if you have anything available.

Thanks.

Hi Darryl.

I can confirm that is the correct Carriers you are looking for, and they are out there, tho it may take a while to scare one up.

I think there is a thread about them somewhere on MLU. Be aware, that at first glance they look symmetrical but they are not. From the factory, one long edge had “FRONT” stencilled in white at the centre of the edge and there is more end sticking out beyond the angle iron on one end than the other. Cannot recall which at the moment.

Keep up the great work and stay safe!

David

Surely the carrier in the photo with the set fitted is a No 21.

Hi David and Adrian,

Thanks for the replies.

Adrian - yes, someone else has mentioned to me that the one I need with the PSU beside the set is the No 21. I know nothing about these things but it appears to me the manual is incorrect if I want a setup like the picture.

Hi Darryl.

Ever notice how every project seems to come with unexpected challenges?

Perhaps the answer to the correct Carriers is hidden in the installation text description. If the notes refer to placing the Power Supply on its side on top of the Wireless, a Carriers No. 22 is in order. If the notes imply a side by side installation, the No. 21 is what you need.

With just the two photos, it is difficult to tell which one is incorrect. An insertion mistake into the manual could go either way.

Generally, the written text of the manual would be done first, with “insert Photo
Here” notes added where needed. When the manuscript was proofed for printing, the photo set would be assembled and checked to go with it.

Do let us know how the new Mystery Novel ends, Darryl.

Cheers,

David

Item 16 on the parts list is ZA.2949 which is the slightly longer strap for mounting the supply unit on top of the set (i.e. on Carrier No.2 or 22).

That said, the "set and standard kit" includes Carrier No.1 and its mounting straps, so it may have been options which carrier was use for the install.

Chris.

Default Carrier set

Hi David and Chris,

Thanks for the replies. I am getting there.

Thanks to Russell, I have checked the measurements of the mounting holes that are in the shelf in the scout car. The mounting holes are about 25 ¼” apart, with the four holes for the end rubber mounts about 3 ¾” apart. Based on that, I need the Carrier, Set, No 21.

I thought I could edit the title for this thread to reflect that but maybe not....

If you are mounting a carrier set no21 or no22 you will need a set of these. See item #32 in the picture of your first post.

These are made by me. Let me know.

Hi all,

Can anyone give me an idea of what I might have to pay for a No 21 set?

Thanks.

Do you mean a No.21 carrier or a No.21 set? There is a Wireless Set No.21 that is quite different than a No.21 carrier for a No.19 set. This radio stuff couldn't get more confusing...

Just to throw out a number, a No.21 carrier complete with the straps, mounting plates and hopefully the canvas pads is an $300~$500 item. Less if its missing parts but then the search for those starts.

If used in a vehicle restoration making one up can be a cheaper and viable option if you can live with that.
