Canada's fighting vehicles, which is a reprint of a WW2 maual to give data to aid transport of FVs, offers a bit of the data you seek:
ground pressure: 6.4 pounds per square inch length: 144 inches width 84" height : 63" weight fully equipped: 9800 lbs. I believe empty, a complete carrier is around 7800 lbs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited to add this: from Bart Vanderveens book FVs directory: weight: 7910 lbs, gross weight 9774 lb, so I was pretty close. His also gives the dimensions as L=148,W=83,H=63. I recall the carrier being a very tight fit in the back of an MLVW, which has a 12 box, so between 144 to 148 would be correct. I think the little light on the bottom of the " caution:RHD sign", used to have to fit into the window hole of the front stakes, and the front tie downs hung over the talgate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have always transported my carriers with a one ton and a trailer. But a trip straight across Canada might make me use a shipping company. Then again you will have to get these accessories eventually. ![]() Last edited by rob love; 05-01-05 at 17:52. |

Brad , might I suggest you go with any trucker who has a van body trailer. Surely you can find one of a number of fellows who may be making a return trip from BC with an empty or partial trailer and get a good price.

Yes, thats the one of e-bay. It was not quite the gem the sellers made it out to be. The armour had been cut, the rear armour piece was homemade, the lower hull rusty, the track semi-siezed, and a lot of the parts were either missing (some were parts which were even shown in the photos) or not origional. On the plus side, the engine turned over, and only had some very minor water damage in the cyls, and some of the stowage boxes are the best I have seen. The inside of the bren barrel box still has the wood and felt brackets, and one of the grenade boxes has it's plywood "grenade cradle" inside of it as well. Work is progressing slowly; it was -35 here this morning. |

I have started offering some parts for the carriers. See them at www.midwestmil.com and go to the carrier page.

There are advantages to the -35. Yesterday I was out in the workshed taking apart the steering shaft. I had already taken the one apart from this carrier and it was a bit#% to get that bottom bearing off. I had to use pullers, and liberal heat. I went to take a second shaft apart yesterday, and at -35 everything came right apart with just a light hammer; even the cast piece (CTL2865) that the steering linkages hook to slid right off the main shaft(CTL 12000). Lets see you guys in the tropics of the maritimes or Australia do that!!!
It's warmed up to -26 this morning, and believe me, that makes a difference. It's supposed to go up to -16 this afternoon. The folding antenna base has a bit of a puzzle on it. The antnna base on it is metal, and actually appears to be a wheel bearing socket welded on to the metal plate. I haven't got around to removing it yet. At present I am just working on components that can be brought into the shop, with the aim of getting the brakes and steering up to scratch. I had a tough time finding the bottom bearing for the shaft (a SKF # RM8); the nearest one was in Toronto at $63. A websearch showed I could possibly get one out of England @ 8Euros, but by the time I ever got it here we would be back to +26C. |
