Thanks for the stowage and lubrication charts. interesting to see the differences between the Mk1 and Mk2 stowage. Does anyone have an equivalent stowage plan for the Mk1?

A belated thank you on my part, I'd been looking for a full version of the stowage diagram that Hanno put up in the separate folder.
I'm tagging on a quick question as well. Was the technical drawing "Carrier, Universal Mk.1 Drawing No: TD.5917" for the Canadian Mark I* carrier? https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C2193077 Thanks Gary

I can tell you Canada produced multiple variations of instruction books for the Canadian produced first series universal carrier. The first edition book(s) (5-1/2” x 7-3/4”) identifies the vehicle as ‘Universal Carrier MK.1’ That book does not have internal pockets for folded diagrams. The stowage diagram uses a two page centrefold style image with a key on a separate page. Subsequently the naming convention was altered to read ‘MK-1*’. to identify Canadian production. New manuals were produced, initially in paper cover, followed by water resistant covers. The lubricants and stowage diagrams were folded twelve times to reduce their 22” x 33” format to fit inside the cover pockets. When the covers were updated to water resistant material, the folded diagrams were also changed from paper to a canvas weave. This image shows the canvas weave type laid over a paper version, one being lubricants, the top one being stowage. The particular naming style is displayed. Unlike British produced charts or diagrams, no dates or design credits are printed on them. |

Thanks for the reply and the explanation of where stowage diagrams fitted in (quite literally) to the available literature.
It caught my eye because there was a list published in Progress Bulletin (Infantry), in June 1944, that listed all the then available, and anticipated, stowage sketches for various types of carrier. To the best of my knowledge, the latest ones issued for the carrier in the Infantry role were S12 and S13 of 1943, so I was curious to see the 1944 date on the UK National Archives entry for TD.5917. On review, I wonder if it might be that the TD.5917 drawing might be more along the lines of TD.18326, which is more of a technical drawing rather than a stowage diagram. I did have a splurge a few years ago on drawings packs from Bovington, concentrating on carriers and all types of cars, such as scout, armoured and recce. They do offer separate packs for the Carrier, Universal, Mk.I* and Carrier, Windsor, Mk.I* so I did wonder if there was a Cdn stowage scheme tucked quietly away at TNA...probably not though. I've tried to upload the lists from PBI but had the same problems as the original poster, so will try and add it to the folder Hanno created. Gary
