I have just aquired a FQ15 a Dodge M37 copy, you can see pictures on the sargents mess of MLU. Just read the latest Kieth Web story abou his mum saving his good mate (nameless) from the Mexican Police.
If anyone has info on this type of military truck would love to hear from you. Mark |

Afternoon Mark:
Not sure what info you are looking for but I can give you this much, from Bart Vanderveen's Directory on Post WWII vehicles. There was apparently first the FQ10 starting in 1959 that was labelled a "Weapons Carrier". This was followed by the FQ15L (1963) and the 2FQ15L in 1964. There was also an ambulance version of the FQ15 vehicle. As mentioned elsewhere, Nissan also did a similar vehicle in two slightly different versions. I would assume these specific vehicles would not have seen service in Korea but they certainly did in VietNam. I have a half dozen or so "period" photos of both the cargo and ambulance versions of the Toyota I can post when I get my scanner fixed/replaced if that would be of interest to you. May have a catalog or data sheet somewhere too. I know I do have one on the later Nissan truck. Let me know. Bill

Interesting about Bob over in WA having this type of Toyota truck I will give him a call tonight. This is the vehicle that I hope to use on the back to the track trip in 2005. Drive train is all good it only needs a cosmetic tidy up. They are very strongly built owning and restoring a WC51 it is interesting to compare the differances. But the toyota people appeared to have had a simple philosophy " make all the Key Components TWICE THE SIZE. Axles, springs, UJ, Chassis are all very heavy in construction.

Funny that it was built in an era when Japanese cars were known as tinny.
Have you looked under the bonnet to make sure it's not just re-used Milo tins?

Yes I remember the days when mum would buy a cheap pressed steel car or truck from Woolies that was made in Japan. If you bent the little tabs up to pull your toy apart you found a Jap hair spray tin on the inside.
How things have changed now in Australia to buy Japanese you are at the top end of the market for tools or electronics. If you want cheap it will say made in China, when will we see their copy cars and trucks arriving here? Mark |

Just think what some of those would be worth to collectors nowdays.
As for Chinese cars, of course we have a lot of Korean crap - er product here. Most of it looks like it's been designed in some weird parallel world where everything is juuuuust off enough to be ugly to our eyes. I wonder why that is - none of the Hyundais or Kias look quite right, and some would benefit from the treatment meted out by the Centurion at Ace Hi.

Korean Hyundai's look positively classic alongside some of the atrocities they foist on the poor Aussie farmer like the Indian built Tata trayback or the Indonesian Jumbuck ute. Have we become a third world country already?
As to chinese copies, the "Beijing Jeeps" were available here in the early '90s, I think about 3 sold before they realised how bad they were! As for anything else, try going into a hardware shop, toyshop, clothing shop or buy christmas decorations, and see if you can find ANYTHING not made in China. And they are surprised that China is growing at 15% per year and will have the worlds largest economy by 2040. ![]() |

Attached is a contemporary photo of the later variant. I have 4 more photos to go but am breaking in a new scanner and just getting the hang of editing with it. Hope to send the others tonight or tomorrow. Bill

Thanks Bill the Tarp detailed over the load bed is great, as this is on my list of must build for the trip accross Australia next year. I s the truck in service with a South Vietnamese unit? as by bumper markings. The rear view mirrors are a real contraption, mine are just about the same style and location as Dodge Weapons Carrier.

Mark:
Still fiddling with the edit program but again hope to get the other 4-5 photos off by tomorrow. The photos are from a batch supplied in the mid 70's by a former Army Officer friend of mine who is now deceased. I do not want to say for sure after all these years but I do believe they were taken in Viet Nam. I think he did like 2-3 tours during the period 1967-1972 and supplied to me several hundred images of various US and Vietnamese trucks, armour etc. Sadly, that era was not in my real area of interest and the bulk of those photos etc. are piled in boxes and not collated in any way. I just happened to like the Toyo/Nissan trucks and had put them in a separate file which was easy to access. Try to get back to you tomorrow if possible. Bill

Hello Valjer I am looking for any info on production Dates and Chassis numbers. Manuals in English and info on the use of this type of truck by armed forces. Also anyone with spares.
The truck in the photos supplied Bill is a Toyota not a Dodge M37 as common on the American side of the Pacific. The only one of these that I know of in US captivity is owned by Steve Owen of Owens Export. Mark |

They run well and are a pleasure to drive in comparision to a CMP, probally notched up 20,000KM in the last year in the Tojo. They are very well made for a 3/4 ton truck probally will carry 3 tons if asked

Rusty;
She's beautiful! Like Mark, I'm interested in any details anyone can provide. Production dates, serial numbers, manuals, and especially first hand user info and pictures I could use for an aticle for our Toyota club magazine... |
