Anyone know of Stuart tanks, either M-3 or M-5 for sale or trade?
We may have the start of a new project and would like some info on availability and prices. Cheers, Happy New Year to all.... Rob McCue ![]() |

I purchased my Stuart for 25,000, but the inside was in rough shape, and it did not run. I had stripped it down to the hull, and had the engines bored and sleeved. My daughter then got very ill and I had to sell it. I got 35,000 for it. If I had been able to finish it, it would have sold for over 65,000. armor is very expensive, and expensive to move.
I have a buddy who owns a tractor trailer. I checked on both a Sherman and a Stuart. The main reason the Stuart is so popular is you can transport it on a regular semi, without a escort, or overweight permits. A Sherman has to have both. It cost about .75 a mile to move a Sherman. |

Not sure where these shots should go but remembered this thread on the Stuart, I dont know about most of you but with the forum being so large now it takes a time to find old items. The search can be useful but at times one needs to be very close to the mark to find a location.
Any way here are two photos of i think the M5 version converted to gun tractors and in use with the post war British army in the 1950s, the first tows a 6pdr anti tank gun the second judgeing by the large letter H is taking part in the Suez crisis Les |

Rob, don`t know if you are a subscriber but I`d suggest your unit get Military Vehicles Magazine from the US.
Inside, there are many dealers of parts and pieces, one name that comes to mind is David Yamulla in Pennylvania. They carry many armour parts. |

Hi Les (or others!),
Can you fill me in on a few things in regards to those pics please. i`m no strategist, but what would be the major advantages of having a stuart as a gun tractor over an armoured vehicle/tank? i`m guessing fire power of the 6pdr over the 37mm? (is that correct as i`m not an armourist? either!) and speed/manouverability of the vehicle? Secondly, what are the 5 tubes lined up across the front of the hull below the headlights and also in the long line infront of the driver above the headlights? Thanks, Ian.

Hi there Ian!
Well will start 1st up with the "5 tubes". Well they are know by several names, growsers, cleats etc... they are clamped on to the track (*about 1 ever 4th track block) to provide additional grip when needed. e.g. on ice, mud, sand etc. But are removed when on hard surfaces like on tarmac roads. Now to the next part... The M5 series Stuart was a fast (35mph +) and manooverable little tank. More so once the obsoleate 37mm gun and turret was removed. As a gun tractor for the 6pdr A/T gun it provided the gun crew and ammo a higher degree of protection than say a weapons carrier or CMP could ever hope to do and in many situations better cross country traveling. I certainly know what I would rather be in when the hot lead started to fly! Phil... ![]()

Thanks Phil!
Excellent! That has cleared things right up! (for both answers!) I now will know what they are (the growsers/cleats) if i see them in a pile of scrap! Ian.
