Question More Questions on Front Axles

Gents,
I have been reading about Bob Carriere's efforts with rebuilding a front axle UV joint. I have the Bendix-Weiss type Joint in my old dear and have 2 of each side so hopefully I will be able to make one of each side from the "best" pieces.
My Question is in relationship to the Kingpin bearings in C15A's they being "New Departure 928" Angular contact ball bearings, of which there seems to be very few on the planet. Has anyone converted to a cup and cone tapered roller type bearing as is seen in most "new" 4WD's. If so what is the bearing brand and number?
I haven’t had time to some reverse engineering as to the forces that the bearing of this type has to withstand and I haven’t been able to find any info on the New Departure 928 bearing despite buying quite a few New Departure books / catalogues from that era.

Default don't despair.....yet!!!!

some NOS bearings are still around...... probably Dirk in Holland.

...also..... I deal with an industrial bearing place here in Ottawa Canada...... I discussed with him if any such design of bearing are still manufactured..... he showed me various such flat bearing available.... out of curiosity he will search is sources for such an animal.... he is rare in willing to search things out for me... parts numbers are so old that they are useless... instead I bring in the bearings and he conducat a reverse search according tocritical measurements..... ID...OD.... etc.....

Will keep you posted.... amazing what is still available outhere.

Default Bad news......

After a few days of searching various sources and reverse sourcing by dimension size........ seems no one in the world makes these bearing anymore at least not in the sizes we need.

But the supplier came up with this solution...... we opened one of the bearing has the brass was a bit streched..... and he tells me they can be rebuilt using new ball bearing which he had in stock.

Now granted thsi was one of the better bearing I brought him but he examined both upper and lower races and pronouced them very good.... and he had 36 proper size ball bearings... he recommended replacing the whole set as one..... about $3.00CDN each times the 12 required. He recommended packing with Moly Extreme Pressure grease..... that is grease with Molydenum Disulphide... like a graphite mixed in grease.....

I passed for the time being because as I have a full NOS set but will carefully examined my old one in case of future use......

Default Thank goodness.....

Thanks Dirk

You may be one of the only source to keep our CMPs on the road...... at least with all 4 wheel turning.

Default Made a tool for relubricating

Made a tool for re-lubricating these bearings without blowing them apart, clean them real well with solvent first until you can rinse in clean solvent with out getting the solvent dirty then slip them on the tool and pump grease through.
