RAF Fordson Sussex 6x4 ballon winch

Would anybody have more details or pictures of this winch in the back of this Fordson Sussex 6x4 ballon winch RAF?

One of these vehicles is preserved in the RAF Museum in NW London, in the Battle of Britain Hall. So the RAFM may have some pictures

However the restoration of their vehicle was featured in an MV magazine some years ago (it could be Windscreen, the magazine of the MV Trust in the UK). I will try to find out which it was and see if there are any photos of the bit you are trying to see. Perhaps Les who has posted many RAF vehicle photos on this Forum will have some too.

The other night I found this photo on the internet. Is this the view that you wanted?

The photo is said to be of a CAPTURED vehicle in use by the Germans. I can't see any German markings on it, so I do not know if that's true. If these vehicles entered service in 1938 or 1939 it could have been captured in France in 1940.

Sorry guys i did make a note of this thread but have been busy getting my leg and neck kicked back into shape the last couple of weeks plus i have to get back on the music scene a.s.a.p to earn a crust

re the RAF Museum vehicle let me know exactly what you would like and I will try to find out the info for you, If you can let me know tonight or early tomorrow I can take photos etc.

Its also on a DVD 'Classic Military Vehicles' DVDIV 052.

If I remember rightly the winch was originally promised by the RAFM restoration centre, but after some 'problems' they sourced there own!

An interesting series of photos – they seem to depict 2 slight variations of body – in pictures 2 & 6 there is some sort of handwheel partially recessed into the rear deck on the (UK) nearside, also the winch “cover plate” above this has more of a radius – pictures 4 & 8 have no such handwheel and the cover is a different shape.
Are these definitely all fordsons? (I can’t recall if any other makes were used) – compare the side of the bonnet (hood) in picture 1 with that in 2 & 3.
Les, I was particularly intrigued by picture 6 (JMG 982) which appears to be in some sort of “ship” – I wonder – is it a Landing Barge? Do you have any info to go with the picture?

showing the whole construction in detail + some pictures of the
vehicles used.

Hi Noel

The photo of the Ford in the barge is one of a few used during the Blitz to i suppose make them more mobile around the centre of london and to help protect dockside they were placed in the type of barge used for moving cargo up and down the river and to me that would have been the restriction on movement, just up and down the river.

THE austin K6 was also fitted with the winch as seen in these PW RAF trucks, the winches served on well into the 1960s and i have seen a couple in recent years at glider clubs although not mounted on the trucks

Noel , you mentioned hand wheels in your reply how about the set on this pre war fordson. I am not sure as to where the operater would have been situated there is a large gap between winch and cab but i cannot imagine a pod being placed there for safety reasons
