Since I am in the process of having two sets of HUP mud flaps made up by the Caldwell Bros, I thought that I would post some photos of the 45 HUP flaps.
The first photo shows only the upper portion of my original flaps - the bottom portion having rotted away. The originals had metal plates sandwiched between the canvas layers, thus ensuring their destruction once wet (more photos to follow). The holes in the upper flap delineate the differences between front and rear flaps (for what reason, I don't know). The metal strip secures the flaps to the fenders.

You can just see the rusted metal plate revealed by the hole in the flap.

Rob,
The front flaps that came on my truck were made of rubber and obviously post war fabs. I cannot say what, if anything was inside the canvas 'pocket' of flap material. The rear flaps were is great shape ( from the West ) and were just canvas pockets with nothing in them. No horse hair, or any other padding. To weight them down a 1/8" x 1.5 x 12inch strip of steel flat stock was slipped into the bottom, then sewn shut. I have left a sample with a tent maker in Tillsonburg, Ontario and hope to have the rear set back this week. I will post a before/after snap when they arrive in B'Ville. As my front clip is still on 2 saw horses in the garage I did not want to stab at fabbing the front flaps, but I shall get my template material out and see how close a HUP flap is to a 15cwt. Thanks for the resto pix. Stewart 5 1/2 weeks to BB2 ![]() |

were the mudflaps made from canvas on all CMP trucks?
I need a set on my C8AX, so I presume the HUP style will be the same. Was their any change between 1943 and 1945? Rob C8AX Ambulance (NZ) |

rob, on my 13 cab f30 were fitted rubber mudflaps as the paint was original factory flat brown/green colour.
i doubt it had seen the light of day. did the canvas mud flap come in later in the war ,as rubber got scarce ??.

Here's a bright idea lads. Rather than refitting a length of mild steel in the mudflap as a weight, use a length of stainless steel , thus eliminating the rust problem !
ken, my 42 C-30 LAAT has rubber rear mudflaps and canvas front ones, which looking at the design records appear to be correct Keith |

I think Mike should shave before he does hand modelling.
When I made up my mudflaps for my KL many years back, I was fortunate enough to have access to the brake riveter at work. The KL had the metal plates on the outside rather than inside. I don't know where the truck is now, but the flaps would now be about 14 years old...I wonder how they have held up? |

11 cabs and all the 12's I've seen here in the UK were fitted with large rubber flaps on the rear wheels only. I think you are correct in assuming that canvas was substituted for rubber as a result of shortages after the fall of Singapore perhaps ?, I’ve also come across a number of synthetic tyres (the ones with the red dot on the side wall) with mould dates around this period too so perhaps it all fits together. Interesting detail of the world situation driving the design parameters and not just limited in CMP’s to rubber usage of course Pete |

Any photos of the rear cab 12 rubber flaps so I could make repros for my cab 12 F8? David |

I don't have anything for 8cwt's but I do have details for 15, 30 and 60cwt rear mud flap. I suspect the 8cwt flap was smaller in size, search on the forum under 8cwt and see what you can turn up in terms of photos. Pete ![]() |

Here are the old and new flaps. I supplied ( from Canadian Tire no less ) the strips of metal to add some mass to the lower edge. I can't afford stainless steel, but aluminium in the correct width and thickness is easily cut to size and sewn into the flap. I suspect that it will be equally corrosion resistant in this application. To attest to the authenticity of the new flaps, my lovely wife commented after they had been in the car for about 45 seconds "they stink like an old military vehicle" - so they are good enough for me! Good work on the BIG flaps. My punny lil HUP flaps look like they are quite small by comparison. Do you have the dimensions for your flaps?

The rear of the C15 is flapped. They are 13.25 x 16.25. Don't worry about smallish flaps. Bob once made fun of me for smallish oil holes, but I got over it ... Here's a snap... Stewart ![]() |

Stewart,
You actually let your wife park her car near your CMP??? Thanks for the flap dimensons. The truck looks great. By the way, where did you get the "rusty thing"?

If you don't need/want the rusty scraps on the floor by the wheel, I'll take them off your hands on the off chance they can be made into something useful, perhaps a spare tire carrier if nothing else seems better. Anything to save you from "Keep that horrible rust away from my lovely car".

Rob and Grant,
I got that rusty thing from a fellow we know near Niagara Falls. I hope to have the wheel braces copied, but this has stymied most of the repro efforts that I have seen in the recent past. If I can get them done right I shall post some pix and see if anybody else needs/wants a set. Stewart 1 month warning to BB2! |

Hi Stew......
The only way to make these tire/wheel clamps would be with a huge press and appropriate dies....... I beleive that they are 3/16 thick..... the compound curves are murder... Following the process done by Phil W. to make the engine cover of the cab 12..... you could cut a number of subassemblies.... heat and shape to appropriate curve then weld back together and mucho grinding to hide the welds....... a "one off" is feasible with patience..... doing a number of them would be $$$$$...although a lot of people would want one...... Slaughtering the bull for BB 2 next week...... .... the neighboring farmer doesn't know yet!!!!! BooB
