Default Quick! Somebody notify Ottawa

According to this mornings Portland Oregon newspapers, the US Navy has decided not to repair the USS Miami, the Los Angeles Class submarine damaged by some wing nut setting fire to it in dry dock a few months back. This should make a great addition to the RCN submarine fleet and they should be able to purchase it for a amazing price as it has already been pre damaged!!

Ahhhh! That explains it. The lack of current media coverage prompted the captain of HMCS Corner Brook to nose dive his 70.26 meter long sub into the bottom in just 45 meters of water!

As far as I know, it has always been known as bad luck to change names on vessels. Co-incidence, no, that two Canadian subs re-named end up ill-fated?
Maybe they were just junk to begin with...

I do not have information as to the worthiness of the subs in general, but as Micheal has pointed out, operational errors caused the fire, resulting in the death of one crew member, on the Chicoutimi. Any piece of equipment, when operated improperly, can be destroyed fairly easily.

As we all have heard previously. these British subs were problem plagued right from the get go.
According to W5, the British had mothballed them very early after commisioning because of ongoing issues and were well aware of the short comings they had. It was a case of spend their way out or essentially scrap them and hope someone would come along and buy them....
I was merely suggesting, albeit tongue in cheek, that it is ironic that sailor's superstition and co-incidence, whether human error or not, seem to play together.

Chris,

Looks like a British Commonwealth plague. The Australian "State of the art" Collins Class submarines cost enough to pay off the entire European debt and have been non-operational for long periods and subject to trouble from day one.

One PR exercise to counter the terrible publicity saw the film crew on board for a live firing exercise. Sneaking up on the target the captain gave the order to fire and bells started going and nothing happened. On the subsequent TV programme they did not edit the captains voice in the the background saying "This thing is a piece of s..t!"

Remembering that like small arms, these things are built by the lowest bidder, to a budget.
Join the Navy and see the world (not as a sub mariner by the sounds of it)
Join the Army and clean it up.... or alternatively (while ignoring the Vietnam war poster of a soldier with hands full of hair) Join the army and get a head.

With all that has changed, "Nuthins changed"

But the RNZAF maritime squadron (P3's) just loved the Collins Class subs: it was the loudest thing in the water, so that even the less-than-up-to-date NZ Orion electronics could hear them slipping 'stealthily' through the depths!!!!

http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/...roversy-04563/

I remember seeing a company name at a defence trade show that I didn't recognize. They were some sort of major sponsor too. It took a while for me to learn that they were the major contractor for the sub' repairs. I doubt anyone would pick them out of a line up as big defence spending benefactors.
