It's a rainy day so I've been playing on the puter. I figured I'd try to make plans for a 2A1 box based on the factory photos I have. In one of Greggs books it gives the overall length and width so I opened the pic in Photoshop and cropped it to the overall length of the box. Next I made the image size 79.5" which is the box length so the image is actual size.
Now to get a measurement I just crop the pic to the place I want to measure then look at the image size and it gives it to me in inches. Now hit step backward and you're back to the full size pic and ready to crop another measurement. It really works slick. You'd have to start with a straight on shot for this to work but for those factory photos they were trying for the straight on shots so they work great. In the attached image I cropped one of the flatiron setups on the side of the box and this is what the image size window told me. If you wanted, you could crop it in 8x11 pieces and print out a full size image on about 33 sheets of paper. I think I'll do the full size one in wood though!

I scaled off the high resolution photo of the 1A2 box and worked out the dimensions of the top frame side section , the U channel that fits along each side to mount the framework
After getting your measurments I compared them to my guesswork ..... I was spot on correct ... Just goes to show that it can be done . They tended to use standard imperial lengths , so that helps . Mike

I worked out a formula where you just need one known measurement of the vehicle (wheelbase for example) and then use the formula to scale other parts of the vehicle for model making.

I just got my Auto Sketch 9 program ($24.95 plus shipping off ebay) and started playing with it. It has a really neat feature that my ancient version didn't have. You find a straight on picture of what you want to draw (2B1 in my case) and embed it in the drawing. Get it the right size for the scale you're using then trace over it with the drawing tools. Now use the measuring tools and you've got actual measurements of any part you want without any conversions or the like. Having said that, I'm going to go back and play some more.

The top drawing is the picture being traced. In the bottom the picture is deleted and measurements taken. Neat, eh?
