| Chevrolet CGT in British or Canadian Service

Hi guys My Chevrolet CGT is progressing. As my 25pr and limber are British I am as yet undecided as to whether to finish it as a Canadian or British Army vehicle. My question is this - does anyone know which British Army Field Regiments used the Chevy gun tractor in WW2? Did Canadian Field regiments sometimes have British made guns and limbers? (As yet I know nothing of the vehicle's actual history) thanks Rick Overy |

I read an autobiography of a British eighth army gunner who mention's that they swapped their (worn out ) Morris's for Chevrolet gun tractors for their 25 pounders shortly before they were transferred from North Africa to Italy.

All pictures of CMP Quads in British service that I can find are from 12 Cab Quads . So maybe when they refer to Chev or Ford Quads they mean 12 cab versions |

| # 11 or # 12?

The earliest-known photo of a British-order Chevrolet GT, taken in May or so 1941 is a # 12 cab, so I believe that there were no # 11 cab GTs. Of course there were also some rebuilt # 42 cab Chyevrolet Portees that were converted to tractors though did they just run with 17-pounders? The earliest British Ford GTs were asembled at Dagenham, model EC011QF, delivered under SM 2020 and asembled under V/4513. These must have been # 12 cabs. Of course there were # 13 cabs, from both GM and Ford. |

  - The book was 'The Fusing of the Ploughshare ' by Henry R Ritchie an excellent very readable book about a gunners life in the desert war with a Morris quad and 25 pounder , I'll dig it out and see if he mentions the Division. Pennies on Amazon- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fusing-Ploug.../dp/B001VS1OZU Last edited by chalky; 22-02-11 at 17:47. |
