I drove an M38A1 with that CFR when it was held by B Coy the Lorne Scots PD&H in Brampton, Ontario. Would have been 1983 or so. Nickname in the Regt was "crazy eights".

I believe .... a fellow in Kemptville has the plate, or at least one of the many replacement plates. He hasn't shown it to me, only smiles and winks about it.

the reason I'm looking is due to fact the jeep is sitting behind my shop and I would like to see the two together again , it isn't very often that something like this can happen,

I swear that this vehicle had a GPMG pedestal mount fitted. This was confirmed by someone you may know...Brad Bean. Trouble is, Frank can't find any evidence of a pedestal having been fitted. Perhaps re-tubbed?

The mystery continues.
Jim, was there another jeep in the compound with a pedestal, c.1976?

The pedestal mount could well be in a infantry unit. It was the side arm that was intended for the light recce, although a few did move around due to VMOs. I remember one kicking around cougar support squadron in Gagetown in 1980, and on a M151A2 no less.
Has anyone looked up the unit history of this truck on the EDR viewer? |

Hi Guys, I know that these were uncommon mounts in the CF , some M-31 & M-31C mount kits in the crates did come out of Pet about 15-20 years ago and went to one of the dealers south of the boarder, the M-31 kits had WW2 dates on them , the C had the support arms, I have seen some on the M-38's in Germany but never on any M-38A1's cdn, I have seen the GPMG mounts on M-38A1 cdn, cdn2 , cdn3 and the A2 Mutts we had , I still hope someone can come up with the plate , John said they used the vehicle for a movie , the production Co. may have just used a prop, hope all this helps,

I didn't join the reserves until 1982, so I can't speak of vehicles before I arrived. in 1976, I was a cadet.
We had a very small pool of vehicles in Brampton as I remember. One 5/4 ton sigs van, a couple of the old Deuce-and-a-half's, an M 37 radio van (which departed soon after I drove it) a few militia 1 ton Chevy's and only two or three M38A1's. We had no pedestal mounts, side mounts or anything like that around. The only pedestal mount I ever saw was in Cyprus for the M38A1's. They were still hanging around in the QM after we switched to Ilitis for RHQ Recce Troop. |
