Are there any photos extant please of the King and Queen's visit to 1 Division at Aldershot in early June 1940 I think it was? My PICTORIAL HISTORY OF CANADA'S ARMY OVERSEAS has two, and you can see a CMP in the background.
I am also after photos of the official visit by the Earl of Athlone in May when the Governor-General was shown the 1938 Chevrolet 15-cwt GS truck [DND number Z 38-1-20 serial # 815312825] a photo of which was in WHEELS & TRACKS showing that it had been repainted and allocated a 'CZ 42XXXXX' number. Basically it seems that in May the Division had the Chevy, Bedford MW and other British types plus Carriers and then in June Southampton-assembled F15s, and possibly heavier CMPs. |

Hi David:
We had several visits from the Royal Family in 1940 and 41. If you contact the 48th Highlanders museum in Toronto, Canada they may have photos of these events. One, King George visited the Regiment January 24 1940 in Aldershot and the Queen Mother visited us in Dorking in 1941. As you are a historian you may be able to answer a question for me that I have. Now I am going back 60 years but it is still with me. As a young impressionable soldier the visit by the King in 1940 with all the mass of brass left me in great awe. What stands out in my mind above all this was the surprising amount of makeup the King had on. I know he had a very very pale palor but the makeup was very noticable. Now in your research is there any mention of King George using makeup or was it my imagination? |

Dave as a quickie answer visit my 1st Bn 48th Highlander site:
http://dileas.mapleleafup.org/beginning.htm As Norm says there were a number of visits by their Majesties during the 1940s. Unfortunately my site is badly in need of updating but maybe one of these days we will get to it. Aye Dileas. |

David, you have to come to Ottawa. Archives has many of these photos. Any event which included Their Majesties saw a lot of official photographers. Their pix are kept in chronological order in 110 Red books (books which have contact sheets organised by date and event). Most of these have never seen the light of day since the war. Same applies to photos of sporting events and many exercises.
I have a spare bedroom should you decide to take advantage of a seat sale and there is a core group of MV enthusiasts here that you can carouse with in your evenings.

Somewhere in my photos, and don't ask me where it is,I have a small photo, taken from a second floor balcony onto a macadam parking lot,of King George V & Mackenzie King inspecting my fathers' section(RCASC).There's an ink arrow over my dad's head pointing him out in line in the front row of the section while being inspected. The picture had to be taken in the fall, because,as I recall the troops are wearing helmets, great coats with their webbing on the outside, including gas mask webbing on their chests. They're standing at attention at sloped arms.Hopefully, this picture is included in the collection.Damn, where did I put the picture-the search is on.

We have to come over some time I know..Juliette's 80+ year old uncle [her dad's brother] lives in Ottawa and we have not seen him for years.
I believe the late King had his cancerous problem then? He was a heavy smoker and that of course killed him. I will ask my dad..he met the late King and Queen and the Princesses at Windsor circa 1948 when in the RAMC when they entered a private area by mistake. |

Another picture of 1st Division Canadian troops shows their Majesties with the COs of
the 1st Brigade and General Andy McNaughton. The picture was taken 24 May 1940. at Aldershot. The 48th Officer in the foreground, Capt Phil Seagram, was the first 48th Officer killed due to enemy action. ![]() |

I posted these pics from the collection of RCASC officer Len Pease (via a friend) a while back - could the first pic be from that occasion? (the officer to the King's left is Pease)
