Study: Canadian Beer Drinkers Threaten Planet

Scientists have found a new threat to the planet: Canadian beer drinkers.

The government-commissioned study says the old, inefficient "beer fridges" that one in three Canadian households use to store their Molson and Labatt's contribute significantly to global warming by guzzling gas- and coal-fired electricity.

"People need to understand the impact of their lifestyles," British environmental consultant Joanna Yarrow tells New Scientist magazine. "Clearly the environmental implications of having a frivolous luxury like a beer fridge are not hitting home. This research helps inform people — let's hope it has an effect."

The problem is that the beer fridges are mostly decades-old machines that began their second careers as beverage dispensers when Canadians upgraded to more energy-efficient models to store whatever Canadians eat besides doughnuts and poutine.

University of Alberta researcher Denise Young, who led the study, suggests that provincial authorities hold beer-fridge buy-backs or round-ups to eliminate the threat — methods that Americans use to get guns off the streets.

Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would prefer to drink chilled beer anyway. Lack of access to decent top-fermented ale I suppose Chilling is really not good for the yeast cultures or are there people out there drinking pasteurised beer ?

Precisely for that reason. Our beverages mature within our more highly-evolved urinary tracts, as they should (it is written thus).

Our yeast cultures are specially bred to die honourably by the billions within our water systems, and by doing so, become a natural cleansing bacterial agent for our national water table, thus helping to keep the planet Green. It's nothing more, or less, than a much-maligned and misunderstood key element of Canada's overwhelming contribution to environmental revitalisation world-wide.

I understand what you're saying Geoff but I'm not completely convinced. If the yeast cultures are kept alive then there is the additional benefit of bacterially cleansing one's insides out also. It's a risky business I realise but someone's got to do it

My judgement might be coloured (and not just my judgement actually ) by the fact that I'm sitting here with a more than acceptable Trappistes Rochefort 8° (9.2% vol) served at workshop temperature

I think I'll jump in my gas guzzling pickup, drive to town and pickup another 24 and a second beer fridge as well just in protest...after I really should light up the pile of garbage in the back 40 just for kicks while enjoying a nice Bud Light or two.

Nice to have such "frivolous luxuries" ain't it??? Luxuries only available after paying such incredulous taxes.

Chris, Don't forget the kabasa or moose sausage treats. When combined with beer and other eats, one could raise the global temp by at least a half degree C...

I would love to see Al Gore come to Ottawa (-17oC this AM) and yap about how hot it is getting. I just can't let that one go...

In the almost arbitrary manner of going "off topic" I decided to have a look at current temperatures in Canada, particularly in the region of Whitehose, Yukon where my "stray Canadians" hail from. This was after seeing mention of the temperature being -17oC in Ottawa

I laughed out loud at of thoughts about the state that the UK would get into if the temperature reached their forecast high for Monday (-23oC).

There again, the "powers" would probably declare that it was the wrong type of cold (in the style of an infamous incident of the wrong type of snow that some in the UK may remember). More than likely they would just raise the taxes on heating fuels.

I suppose though that we could all just stay inside with the beer, wine, spirits, poteen, etc.

Seriously though, British Rail (as was) made an excuse of trains being late during the winter because the snow was the wrong type and could not be cleared by the snow blowers. Maybe they were on the "snow"

Well, at least there´s one beer drinker who´s saving the planet by not chopping a tree for Christmas, and letting it stand where it is to absorb CO2!

Mike, I think you should send a picture of your Christmas tree to Mrs Yarrow to show you the solution to the problem of your frivolous life style. . . .

And it's RECYCLE-ABLE! How pleased the PCs will be!!!! (but is that organic beer?)

What is also good about this "tree" is that it has enabled all the workers in the bottle factory to get a Christmas bonus making replacement bottles - and after Christmas all those in the glass recycling plant will have a possible overtime bonus getting through all those "Christmas trees"
